When it’s time to renew your non-driver ID—as early as six months ahead of the expiration date listed on the card—renew online. Reminder: a non-driver ID card is to be used for identification only.

Starting May 7, 2025, the U.S. federal government will require anyone boarding an airplane for domestic travel or entering certain federal buildings to have a verified driver's license or state-issued ID card, or be required to show additional proof of identification, such as a U.S. passport. Who’s eligible

You may renew your ID on your ID expiration date or as early as 180 days (six months) before your ID expires.

If your non-driver ID card is expired two or more years, follow the procedure for obtaining a new ID card.

How to renew your non-driver ID in person

Step 1: Gather what you’ll need

The renewal application form that you received in the mail (if available).

Step 2: Gather additional documents (if applicable)
  • If you are applying for a REAL ID verified non-driver ID, you must bring additional acceptable forms of identification. If you already have a verified ID, you do not need to re-apply.
  • If you have had a name change since your ID card was issued you must present an original or certified copy of a marriage license, civil union certificate, divorce decree, or a probate court name change document to verify the name change.
  • If you are living in a shelter, you are eligible for a no-fee renewal. Please provide proof of residency from an authorized shelter or transitional housing location in Connecticut to be eligible for a no fee registration.

Certification of homeless youth or homeless young adult must be signed on Form B-230 by one of the following:

A. School District Homeless Liaison

B. Director of emergency shelter funded by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development or director’s designee

C. Director of run away or homeless youth basic center or transitional living program funded by the USA Department of Health & Human Services or director’s designee.

D. Director of program of a non-profit organization or municipality that is contracted with homeless youth program established pursuant to Section 17a-62a. 

 

  • If you are a blind veteran, you are eligible for a no-fee renewal. Please provide a Certificate of Blindness from the Bureau of Education and Services for the Blind or a letter from a doctor/optometrist that you meet the definition of blind as defined in Connecticut General Statutes 1-1f(a) and provide a DD214 indicating you have been honorably discharged.
Step 3: Make an appointment

Appointments can be made at a DMV office, select AAA locations, and Nutmeg State Financial Credit Union (Milford | North Haven | Norwalk).

 

Note: DMV express offices, such as AAA locations and Nutmeg State Financial Credit Union, may charge a convenience fee up to $8 per DMV transaction.

 

Step 4: Get your ID in the mail

Your ID will arrive through the mail within 30 days. You can keep your expiring ID if there are no changes other than address. For more on this, please see Central Issuance.
