How Central Issuance helps protect your identity

The Connecticut DMV is dedicated to keeping your information safe. We mail ID credentials like driver’s licenses and ID cards directly to you to help protect you from ID fraud and misuse. The facility that mails your credentials is called Central Issuance.

ID Credentials are designed with special features to:

  • Safeguard your personal information

  • Make it more difficult to counterfeit your ID

We create all Connecticut licenses in accordance with Connecticut’s security plan under the REAL ID Act as federal law requires.

Steps to get your ID or CT driver’s license safely mailed to you

All Connecticut residents get a temporary paper credential (TPC) in an in-person appointment. Your driver’s license or ID card arrives in the mail within 20 business days of this appointment. We mail credentials to the address on your application.

We keep your ID safe:

  • If you live in an undeliverable mail zone not served by the U.S. post office, the DMV will mail your license or ID to a U.S. Post Office box address.

  • Your credentials won’t be delivered to a forwarding address.

  • If you don’t receive your driver’s license or ID within 20 business days, please contact the DMV at 860- 263-5700 (within the Hartford area or outside of Connecticut) or 1-800-842-8222 (elsewhere in Connecticut).

You can track the delivery status of your license or ID after you complete the application process.
