Overview

The Driver Training Program (DTP) for persons with disabilities is available to assist any qualified permanent Connecticut resident who requires special equipment to operate a motor vehicle. Initiated in 1945, this is the only state-operated program of its type in the U.S. There is no charge for this training.

Who is eligible

Applicants must:

  • Be a permanent Connecticut resident
  • Have a physical disability which requires, or may require, special equipment to operate a motor vehicle
  • Comply with DMV identification, residency, vision screening, knowledge testing and driver education, licensing, or learner’s permit requirements
  • Receive a medical clearance from DMV's Driver Services Division
  • Be able to independently transfer to the driver’s seat of the Driver Training Program training vehicle, or the Driver Training Program will provide the training in the person’s vehicle that has already been modified and equipped with an instructor’s brake. All personal vehicles used for training have to be properly registered and insured.

How to apply

Obtain the required DMV medical forms for clearance and have them completed by an appropriate healthcare provider.

Have the medical forms completed by an appropriate healthcare provider (M.D., P.A., or APRN), then submit the forms to DMV's Driver Services Division.

After you apply

DMV will notify you by mail of its decision.

If you are cleared for training, DMV will assign your case to a DTP Inspector. DMV will send you a letter (form P-236) by mail with instructions on how to proceed.
