CONNECTICUT DMV: LEARNER’S PERMIT APPLICANTS MUST COMPLETE WORK ZONE SAFETY COURSE

(WETHERSFIELD, CT) - The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles announced that effective immediately, new drivers are now required to complete a free online Connecticut Work Zone Safety Course prior to obtaining a learner’s permit, strengthening early driver education, and reinforcing the importance of safe driving practices.

Work zones are essential for maintaining and improving roadways, but they also present unique driving conditions that require extra care and attention. Changing traffic patterns, reduced speed limits, narrow lanes, and the presence of workers make these areas especially dangerous when drivers are inexperienced, distracted or speeding.

This free online course is designed to educate new drivers at the very start of their driving journey.

“This is an important step in promoting safe and responsible driving behavior. Introducing this course at the beginning of the license process helps drivers develop an awareness and supports long-term compliance with traffic laws,” said DMV Commissioner Tony Guerrera. “Our goal is to ensure drivers keep safety top of mind and understand the consequences of unsafe driving.”

In addition to requiring new drivers to complete the course, drivers who are convicted of a work zone violation will be required to complete the Connecticut Work Zone Safety Course (refer to C.G.S. sections 14-283b and/or 14-212d).

“Work zone safety is a shared responsibility, and each of us plays a role in ensuring workers return home safely at the end of their shift. This new course humanizes the men and women behind the cones and barrels while underscoring what’s at stake when drivers speed, are distracted, or get behind the wheel impaired,” said CTDOT Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto. “I am grateful to our partners at the DMV for bringing this course online, and to Governor Lamont and the state legislature for their continued commitment to protecting roadside workers.”

This initiative reflects our continued commitment to public safety.
