Connecticut DMV Announces Launch of Mobile ID on November 18
WETHERSFIELD, CT - The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced that Connecticut Mobile ID, a secure digital credential that allows residents to verify their identity and age using a mobile device, will launch on November 18th.
“Our administration has made it a priority to make state government more accessible and convenient to access by putting more services online and available through mobile devices. Digitizing IDs is another step forward in that effort,” said Governor Ned Lamont.
"We are excited to be moving our Mobile ID project over the finish line.” said DMV Commissioner Tony Guerrera. “Mobile ID represents our continued commitment to embracing technology. As we approach this milestone, we look forward to seeing the program grow, particularly through the expansion of relying parties and the increased adoption and use of Mobile ID amongst residents. This is a big step forward in our ongoing efforts to deliver convenient access to our services.”
The free app will be available through The App Store and Google Play. Residents will need their physical driver’s license or identification card to complete setup.
Mobile ID is designed to complement, not replace a physical driver’s license or identification card. Residents should continue to carry their physical credential.
At launch, Connecticut Mobile ID will be accepted by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at participating security checkpoints nationwide, including Bradley International Airport and Tweed New Haven Airport.
The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) will provide additional information to licensees in industries that accept IDs over the course of the next month. Businesses will not be required to accept mobile IDs but may choose to as usage increases.
“We are proud to support the efforts of the Department of Motor Vehicles to bring mobile IDs to Connecticut,” said DCP Commissioner Bryan T. Cafferelli. “Over the next month we will communicate with our many credential holders that may want to accept mobile IDs in their businesses. We will provide these businesses with the information and resources they need to ensure compliance with our laws and regulations while still embracing this new technology.”
Businesses can participate by adopting a Mobile ID verification solution that meets their operational needs.
Acceptance will initially be limited. Law enforcement will not accept Mobile ID as a substitute for a physical driver’s license, and it cannot be used for voting or as a flash pass. Businesses are required to use a compatible verification app to validate Mobile ID.
“Launching Connecticut’s Mobile ID program is an important step in modernizing the state’s identification options," Department of Administrative Services Commissioner Michelle Gilman said. "This launch reflects our commitment to keeping pace with technology and offering residents more choice in how they carry their identification. I especially want to thank our colleagues in DAS BITS for their IT support and DAS Procurement for their assistance navigating the complex contracting issues involved in bringing this program to launch."
“Developing Mobile ID required close coordination across the teams responsible for the technology, security, and operation of the program," Mark Raymond, Deputy Commissioner and State Chief Information Officer, Connecticut Department of Administrative Services, said. "This launch reflects the careful work underway to bring useful digital tools to Connecticut residents.”
