Change your name on your CT license or non-driver ID

Name updates to your driver’s license or non-driver ID are provided by appointment only at DMV hub offices or DMV express offices.

Step 1: Visit the Social Security Administration (SSA) to file your name change.

It may take up to 48 hours for SSA to process the change; this must be processed prior to updating your driver’s license or non-driver ID.

Step 2: Gather what you’ll need for your DMV visit

Original documents are required. Photocopies and religious marriage certificates will not be accepted.

  • A completed Change of Name Request (Form E-78).
  • Current driver's license or non-driver ID.
  • Certified documentation that shows the change of name (i.e., marriage license, civil union certificate, divorce decree, probate court documents).
  • License or non-driver ID. When making any material change (e.g., name change, changes to date of birth, gender changes, etc.) to a driver's license or non-driver ID card, the former driver's license or non-driver ID card must be surrendered in conjunction with the issuance of a Temporary Paper Card.
  • Payment for fees. A new license or non-driver ID will be issued indicating the changes made, there is a $30 fee to change your name on your driver's license or non-driver ID card. DMV express office locations, including AAA locations and Nutmeg State Financial Credit Union locations (Milford | North Haven | Norwalk), may charge a convenience fee of up to $8 per DMV transaction.
Note:

The same list above applies for replacing a lost, stolen, or damaged CT driver's license or non-driver ID. Learn more about replacing your license or ID by requesting a duplicate.
