For Immediate Release

RESIDENTS URGED TO OBTAIN A REAL ID AHEAD OF UPCOMING DEADLINE
The Deadline to get a REAL ID is May 7, 2025

Beginning May 7, 2025, travelers will need either a REAL ID or a U.S. passport to board a domestic flight or access certain federal facilities. Without a REAL ID, residents may face delays or may be denied entry.

Residents should be advised, not having a REAL ID does not impact one’s ability to drive or travel by vehicle from state to state.

What you need to know:

  • What is a Real ID? In 2005, Congress passed the REAL ID Act to combat identity fraud and create a more secure verification standard for citizens. REAL ID is the federal standard for verifying ones ID.
  • Who needs a REAL ID? If you travel by plane, or visit military bases or federal buildings, you’ll need either a REAL ID or a U.S. passport. (Learn more about acceptable forms of ID.)
  • How do I know if I have a REAL ID? Real IDs have a star in the upper right-hand corner.
  • Can I wait until the deadline? Your new license or ID will be mailed to you; they are not issued on-the-spot. Residents are urged to plan accordingly.
  • Where can I get a REAL ID? You can obtain a REAL ID at your local DMV or partner location. Select DMV locations will have appointments available on Mondays.
  • Is further guidance available? Residents can visit dhs.gov/real-id to learn more.
