CT Department of Motor Vehicles Performs 379 Inspections
and Apprehends One Fugitive During Operation Safe Driver Week

WETHERSFIELD, Conn. – The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) took part in the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) annual weeklong driver-safety traffic enforcement initiative, Operation Safe Driver Week, which concluded on Saturday, July 13, 2024.

Operation Safe Driver Week aims to improve the driving behaviors of passenger vehicle drivers and commercial motor vehicle drivers through educational and traffic enforcement strategies and interactions with law enforcement.

The focus for this year’s Operation Safe Driver Week was reckless, careless, or dangerous driving. Locally, the DMV’s Commercial Vehicle Safety Division (CVSD) came out strong and performed 379 commercial motor vehicle inspections between July 7, 2024, and July 13, 2024.

As a direct result of the agency’s efforts 45 drivers and 89 vehicles were placed out of service, and a fugitive from justice wanted for an outstanding warrant from Pennsylvania was apprehended.

“Our inspectors do a great job patrolling our highways, and I am proud of their accomplishments and the valuable contributions they make towards promoting public safety,” said DMV Commissioner Tony Guerrera.

DMV Inspectors are POST-certified law enforcement officers with powers of arrest. Each Inspector receives hundreds of hours of specialized training to assist with the agency’s primary law enforcement functions which include:

  • Truck safety and size/weight enforcement
  • School bus inspections and enforcement
  • Licensing of repairers and dealers of new and used vehicles
  • Vehicle identification and auto theft investigation
  • Registration enforcement
  • Speed and traffic law enforcement

Inspectors perform random safety checks and traffic enforcement at weigh stations and on state highways.
