Update the name on your registration or title

Updating the name on your vehicle registration or title is simple, but it will require an in-person appointment at a DMV office.

You’ll need to turn in your current registration. If you’re unable to do so a $20 duplicate registration fee will be charged.

There are different requirements whether you’re looking to add, remove, or change a name the title or registration of a vehicle (that’s currently registered in CT). See below for details.

Required documents

Review the documents below to determine which ones are required during your appointment to change the name on your vehicle registration or title:

  • Original Certificate of Title signed by the vehicle owner that shows the change of name on the reverse side. If the title is currently held by a lienholder, the title must be released for "transfer purposes only." The lienholder should also specify who they are allowing to change on the title.
  • Completed supplemental assignment of ownership (Form Q-1), indicating the change of name, if it’s a non-titled vehicle (vehicles with a model year more than 20 years prior to the current year).
  • Completed application for registration and certificate of title (Form H-13B), signed by both parties and including dates of birth.
    • If the vehicle is being registered in two names, proper ownership conjunction must be indicated using the word “or” for joint ownership or “and” for common ownership) as it will appear on the new registration and title. Learn more about the definition of joint/common ownership
  • Owner’s current Connecticut Insurance Identification Card, which you can get from your insurance company. The insurance card must be in the new name(s) of the registered owner(s) of the vehicle.
  • Certified documentation showing the name change if the reason for the name change is due to marriage, civil union, or divorce. Documents may include a certified marriage license, civil union certificate, or divorce decree.
o Note: Only the registration document must be presented, as the ownership on the title is not changing. If you do not turn in your current registration with the old name, a $20 duplicate registration fee will be charged.

Note about taxes: No sales tax is due on a vehicle received through the transfer or sale to a member of the immediate family—learn more about this process. Immediate family is defined as one's mother, father, sister, brother, son, daughter, husband or wife. Delinquent property tax restrictions also apply.
