Record retention periods

The following is the retention periods for various copies of records kept at the Department of Motor Vehicles:

  • Dealer and repairer complaints
    Dealer and repairer complaints will be disclosed after they are settled and the matter is closed. Records are available for the current year and the previous three years.
  • Operator license records
    DMV retains records pertaining to an operator's license for seven years.  After such time, these records may be destroyed as permitted by Connecticut State Law (Title 14 Sec.14-10).
  • Registration records
    DMV retains vehicle registration records for a period of three years.  After such time, these records may be destroyed, as permitted by Connecticut State Law (Title 14 Sec. 14-10).
  • Driving histories
    Records of traffic violations on driving histories are maintained for three years for most violations, although some serious violations may remain active on the history for ten years.
  • Titles
    Copies of applications for title are available for the last ten years.
