Before you schedule an appointment:

Complete a request for CDL exam from a private citizen (Form R-405)
Email the PDF document to dmv.detu@ct.gov

The DMV processes your request and provides you with a test date within three business days.

Military personnel: Check if you are eligible for a skills test exemption.

Before the CDL skills test

Vehicles you can use

You can’t use:

A trailer greater than 48 feet in length
Vehicle bearing a farm, transport, or any dealer or repairer plates
A truck-tractor as a representative of a Class B vehicle
Vehicles with loaded cargo

What to bring to the skills test

Please bring the following to your CDL skills test:

The representative test vehicle for the class of license for which you are applying. See chart above
A driver who holds a valid CDL that authorizes them to operate the test vehicle to and from the test
Your valid Connecticut driver’s license
Valid Commercial Driver Instruction Permit (CDIP)
Validated gold copy of the application for commercial driver's license (Form R-229a). The $30 validation for the test fee must be displayed on copy.
- Note: If you lose your gold copy, you need to complete a new application and repay the $30 skills test fee at a DMV office before you test. Request a new form to be mailed to you.
A current, legible, unexpired medical certificate completed by a Certified Medical Examiner on file with the DMV before you can renew.

When you test for a CDL

Evaluation

You are evaluated on the following items:

Pre-trip inspection
Static course
On-the-road skills test (also known as a “driving test”)

If you pass

After you successfully pass all sections of the skills test, in order to get the proper classification or endorsements on your commercial driver’s license, you’re instructed to go to the same office where you took your knowledge test.

Wait two business days after you pass your skills test to get your new license so the DMV can enter your results into the system.

If you fail

If you fail any part of the skills test, it results in a failure of the entire skills test. You’re required to complete a new application for commercial driver's license (Form R-229a) and pay $30 to take the test again. Please schedule a new appointment.

You need to wait at least seven days between skills tests.
