Learn about the different ways to renew your vehicle registration in Connecticut

Before you begin

  • Timing: You’ll receive an invitation to renew your registration in the mail or email inbox 45 days before the expiration date. You can renew online at that time. However, there will be a $10 late fee applied to your registration if you renew more than five days after the expiration date. Late fees will be assessed on day 6.
  • Preparation: Make sure to check for issues that may prevent your renewal. This includes unpaid property tax, emissions testing requirements that aren’t addressed, and insurance requirements.

Who’s eligible

Organizations: Click here to renew your registration. 

 

Individuals: Almost all vehicle registration types can be renewed online except ambulance, construction, factory/industrial, fire apparatus, hearse, state service bus, STV-government, and vanpool. 

 

Additional steps may be required to complete certain types of registration. Please refer to your registration renewal notice for more information. 

 

If your registration has been expired longer than the length of your renewal, you’ll need to schedule an in-person appointment to renew your registration. 

How to

Step 1:  Gather what you’ll need:

  • Your first and last name exactly as it appears on your driver's license or non-driver ID card
  • Your driver’s license or non-driver ID card number
  • Your date of birth
  • Your street address on your driver's license or non-driver ID card
  • Your license plate number
  • Your Social Security Number
  • A credit or debit card
  • If applicable, document Required for renewal (ex. Military Waiver Form, Inspection, IRS 2290, etc.)

Step 2:  Have your printer ready:

Please have your printer ready before starting. Once you finish your registration renewal, you’ll need to print it out and keep it in your vehicle.

Note: For individuals, your renewed registration certificate will be accessible online for 30 days for no additional fee - access online now

 

An organization (Example: ACME Plumbing Supplies, Inc.): Please click here to enter your information to renew your vehicle registration.

 

*As an organization, if the DMV does not have your Secretary of State number on file, you must first contact the DMV to have this added to your organization customer record prior to conducting an online transaction.

An invitation to renew your registration will be automatically mailed to you 45 days before the expiration date.

How to

Step 1:  Make an appointment

Step: 2:  Bring your invitation to renew

  • If you do not have your invitation, please bring your driver’s license or ID card.
  • If you wish to name a beneficiary to your vehicle, simply print out this beneficiary form. At the end of the renewal process, just attach it to your registration certificate.
