Program Overview
The Trade Act of 1974 (19 USC § 2271 et seq.), as amended, established Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) to provide assistance to workers in firms hurt by foreign trade. The TAA program offers a variety of benefits and services to eligible workers, including job training, income support, job search and relocation allowances, and a wage supplement to certain reemployed trade-affected workers 50 years of age and older. These benefits are provided at no expense to employers.
Filing a petition is the first step in qualifying for program benefits. After the petition is filed, the U.S. Department of Labor will determine whether the reasons for separation meet the criteria for certification. If so, the CT. Department of Labor will reach out to the adversely affected workers with program information and how to apply for benefits.
