Name: Kyle Sullivan
Title: General Trades Worker
Department of Administrative Services
Governor's Residence
What do you do?
I am a General Trades Worker for DAS at the Governor’s Residence. I maintain the 5 acres of gardens, plantings, and outbuildings and do maintenance and repairs at the Residence itself, which is over 100 years old and a Hartford Historic property.
Why do you work for the state of Connecticut?
Working for the State gives me the ability to have a healthy work life balance. I work on exterior gardening projects as well as working on projects in a historic home and learning new skills. I also help decorate for the Holiday and Spring open houses and assist with public tours.
Tell us the story of your great-grandmother working at the Governor’s Residence?
I just recently found out that in the 1930s, my great-grandmother lived and worked for the Williams family who built and owned the Residence before the State purchased it. My great-grandmother loved to cook and bake for everyone’s birthday in our family, she would make our favorite cookies. When she lived and worked for the Williams Family, they would come home to have a homemade lunch every day. She continued to work there until she had her first baby.
What are some of your favorite activities outside of work?
I look forward to summer every year and have always loved going to the lake, swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, or boating. When the weather is nice, I like to sit with our cat Cinnamon on our screened-in porch.
Where is your favorite place that you have traveled?
I recently took a cruise to Bermuda with my Fiancé! We loved venturing around the island, getting to stop at all the beaches, walking around the island trying to find all of the moongates, and taking tours of the caves. We went through many of the war shelters and museums on the island, too.
What would you tell somebody interested in working for the state?
This is a great place to work. There’s always someone available to lend a hand if you need it and plenty of opportunities to advance.
Where is your favorite place in Connecticut?
New Hartford offers small-town vibes. It also has plenty to offer, from skiing in the winter to beautiful lakes and parks, a picturesque downtown, and hiking and walking trails nearby. There’s something for everyone!
If you could choose one superpower, what would it be and why?
My superpower of choice would be to have a photographic memory. Then I can learn and remember everything that I see.
Who inspires you and why?
My family inspires me. They have always taught me to be the best person I can be, and that is something that one day I want to pass down to my children.
