1. Can you share your current role and key responsibilities within the State of Connecticut?
I am a pod leader within the Statewide Workers’ Compensation team, which is a part of the Shared Services Division. I am responsible for working closely with many agencies in coordination with service providers, legal teams, and dedicated vendors to provide support and guidance during the Workers’ Compensation process. Service to my fellow employees is a priority as we try to obtain the best possible outcomes.
2. What motivated you to pursue a career with the State of Connecticut, and what has been your journey here?
What drew me to working at the State of Connecticut is the strong sense of community in state government. It is important to me to be part of an organization driven by purpose, and I find a deep sense of fulfillment in the service aspects of my job. I originally worked for the State of Connecticut, Department of Social Services, starting in 1995. I left state service when my children were young. During those years, I grew and developed our “certified woman-owned” small business, administering our construction projects from bid to closure, for over ten years. Toward the end of my time operating a small business, a good friend of mine introduced me to a non-profit organization where I began working for the Director of Finance as the bookkeeper. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about how a non-profit runs and how much personal energy goes into working in the non-profit environment, and I loved working there. During my time there, my position expanded, and I explored the various aspects of human resources. After a few years of learning, I applied for a job as a workers’ compensation trainee and was hired back to the State of Connecticut in 2020.
3. What achievements at the State of Connecticut are you most proud of, and what impact have they had?
I have formed some very meaningful relationships during my time at the State of Connecticut. I enjoy learning from others and collaborating with colleagues. What I am most proud of is being able to make a positive impact in the lives of others by listening, communicating, and fostering the growth and development of those around me.
4. What hobbies or activities do you enjoy outside of your work, and how do they enrich your life?
I love to spend time in my garden. I also enjoy garden tours and visiting local nurseries. I find it very grounding to work outside in nature.
5. Could you share a memorable travel experience and what made that destination special for you?
We love going to the beach. Block Island is one of my favorite places to visit. I enjoy observing wildlife, hiking pristine trails, and looking at all the beautiful gardens.
6. What advice would you give to someone considering a career with the State of Connecticut?
I highly recommend working at the State of Connecticut. Work in state government is rewarding, offers immense opportunity for growth, and a great work-life balance.
7. What’s your favorite spot in Connecticut, and what makes it special to you?
I love hiking at Penwood State Park. The hike is exhilarating, and the panoramic views of the Farmington River Valley are beautiful.
8. If you could have any superpower, what would it be and how would you use it to make a difference?
I think I would like a “good sense of direction superpower”. If it was not for the GPS in my car, I would be lost all the time.
9. Who is the person you admire, and what qualities do they possess that inspire you?
I have to say that the people that I admire most are my four adult children. They demonstrate caring, curiosity, and real empathy in everything they do. I try to follow their lead and listen to their advice because they are willing to embrace the changing world.
10. What’s an interesting or fun fact?
Kale grows outside even in the wintertime if it is located in a sunny spot. I find it refreshing to be able to see something green in my yard, especially during the cold and grey winter months in Connecticut.
