Waterbury currently has an ADA accessible platform, but it is too short to support level boarding at all doors and lacks key amenities and passenger comforts. At the same time, nearby Waterbury Union Station, a notable example of New Haven Railroad architecture, is not open to passengers, who often face long waits between trains.

Two coordinated projects will transform the station into a more comfortable and functional space, while also supporting more frequent service and longer trains.
New Platform

The current Waterbury platform is only long enough to accommodate two car trains, with only one car able to provide full door boarding. The platform lacks ticket vending machines and can feel crowded during arrivals and departures.

Using state funds combined with the federal All Stations Accessibility Program grant, CTDOT will replace the existing platform with a new 350-foot ADA accessible platform capable of serving four car trains. The upgraded platform will include ticket vending machines, real time arrival and departure information, and improved waiting space for riders. It will also reflect CTDOT’s updated platform design standards, creating a more attractive and cohesive station that complements recent improvements to parking and pedestrian areas.

Indoor Waiting

Waterbury is home to an outstanding example of Connecticut railroad architecture in the Waterbury station building, once a hallmark of the New Haven Railroad system. However, it has been many years since riders on the Waterbury Line have had access to an indoor waiting area with amenities.

CTDOT is converting the southern portion of the historic station building into a passenger facility, returning riders to the building with a comfortable waiting area, restrooms, and other station amenities.
