I-84 Travelers

The Flex Lane would reduce the potential for bottlenecks and sudden slowdowns that can lead to crashes by improving how all vehicles flow through the corridor. While trucks would be prohibited in the Flex Lane, opening the Flex Lane only during the busiest times would allow all drivers to use the general-purpose travel lanes more reliably, when they need it most.

Neighboring Communities

The Flex Lane would improve traffic flow on I-84, encouraging drivers who usually detour on local roads to stay on the interstate. This helps make the highway and nearby streets better for everyone, including drivers and people walking, biking, and riding transit. Improving traffic flow on I-84 would also result in fewer emissions, improving air quality for communities along the corridor.

Businesses

The Flex Lane would support businesses by providing a more reliable route while reducing travel time and related costs.
The proposed I‑84 Danbury Flex Lane is designed to reduce congestion and improve travel reliability during the busiest times of day by making better use of the existing roadway. Traffic modeling shows that opening the Flex Lane during peak periods would shorten trips for both morning and evening commuters. The maps below illustrate estimated travel time improvements in each direction compared to today’s conditions.
Study area map title PM Eastbound (Toward Waterbury). A dotted line along the study area shows a car starting past exit 3 in Lake Kenosia and ending at exit 8.
In the evening, eastbound traffic toward Waterbury experiences the heaviest congestion as commuters travel home.

Under current conditions, this trip takes approximately 31 minutes. With the Flex Lane open during peak evening hours, travel time is estimated to drop to about 8 minutes — a 74% reduction in travel time.
Study area map titled AM Westbound (Toward NY). A dotted line along the study area shows a car traveling from Route 7 in Brookfield to past exit 3 in Lake Kenosia.

During the morning commute, westbound traffic on I‑84 toward New York regularly experiences congestion, particularly near the Route 7 interchange.

Today, this trip takes about 9 minutes. With the Flex Lane in operation, the same trip is estimated to take about 7 minutes — a 22% reduction in travel time.
