Vision Zero Program Distinction

The Vision Zero Program Distinction for Schools (CT Legislation Public Act 23-116) was established by the Connecticut Vision Zero Council to recognize districts who have worked towards eliminating transportation-related fatalities and severe injuries. School districts are recognized for providing their students with educational opportunities to learn about the mission of Vision Zero and transportation safety and skills. These districts are eligible to apply for Vision Zero Program Distinction in the spring of each year to be awarded the following fall.

In 2025, four school districts received the Vision Zero Program Distinction for their efforts in transportation safety education: Wethersfield, South Windsor, New Britain, and Plymouth. These four districts hosted in-school bicycle and pedestrian skills and safety educational programming. The award ceremony was held at CTDOT headquarters to acknowledge their efforts towards Vision Zero and to inspire other school districts the follow the Vision Zero Mission in their own communities. Congratulations to the recognized school districts!

The 2026 application for the Vision Zero Program Distinction for Schools will be open from April 1-June 1. All eligible schools and school districts are encouraged to apply. Eligible Vision Zero Program Distinction efforts include youth bike and pedestrian safety education, activities or events that promote safe active transportation, school walk audits, safety messaging campaigns, distribution of helmets and safety materials, and any other efforts that contribute to a culture of roadway safety.
