Come Walk, Bike, and Roll with Us

Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Days are fun and active events to give students, staff, and parents the opportunity to experience walking, biking or rolling to school. CT SRTS can support your community through encouragement, event promotion, and distribution of safety items. Last year we had 80 events throughout the state. Let's double this number in 2025! Our kids deserve it.

How it works:

1. Gather your team

  • School administrators, teachers, students, families, and/or community members create an event at their school.
  • We have even seen events organized by bicycling advocates, girl scout troupes, and PTA/PTO’s!

2. Plan your event

  • You can design your event to be as big or small as you’d like.
  • The walkability of the school’s area may impact the type of event you plan.
  • You may decide on a meeting point nearby the school, like a fire station, and all travel in together, encourage students who live nearby to walk, bike, or roll from home.
  • Be creative and tailor your event to your community, hold the event AT school by starting with an assembly in the gymnasium and all heading out to walk a route around the school together.
  • This event can be whatever you make it. Consider your community and get creative.

3. Get approval from the school

  • Make sure your principal is on board before advertising the event to the rest of the community.
  • It is best to reach out well before the event date with your plan.
  • The more involvement, the better. See if the principal is willing to greet students as they finish their trip to school.

4. Spread the word!

  • Let students and families know about your Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day; the sooner the better!
  • Make sure students and families have enough time to prepare.
  • Use the Safe Routes to School flyer template and distribute it through your school’s newsletter, social media, etc.

5. Register your event.

  • Make sure you register your event on the national Walk, Bike, and Roll to School website. This tallies how many schools participates each year and allows other schools in the area to be inspired to do the same next time.
  • If you have any questions regarding event planning or support for your event, reach out to the CTDOT Safe Routes to School coordinator for assistance.
