Today, DAS Commissioner Michelle Gilman and DAS Supplier Diversity Program Manager Meg Yetishefsky joined Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz, SBA representatives and other dignitaries to wish the Small Business Administration a happy 69th birthday.

Connecticut’s Department of Administrative Services is the lead agency for procurement opportunities, and contracts for just about any service you can imagine, and we are dedicated to continuing or efforts to contract with small, minority and women-owned businesses.

The DAS Supplier Diversity Program will work with your small business to complete the Small Business Certification and register your company into the State’s online contracting portal.  The program representative will walk the client through all the resources available to them and help them with any applications and contracting questions.

Lt. Governor Bysiewicz spoke about all the opportunities available in Connecticut for small businesses and how many resources are available to small businesses here in Connecticut including the Procurement Technical Assistance Center and the Minority Construction Council.

In the Small Business Act of July 30, 1953, Congress created the U.S. Small Business Administration, whose function was to "aid, counsel, assist and protect, insofar as is possible, the interests of small business concerns." The charter also stipulated that SBA would ensure small businesses a "fair proportion" of government contracts and sales of surplus property.

The birthday party took place at L & P Gate Company Inc., which was established in 1991 by two brothers, Bolivar and Manuel Jimenez, who learned all about the manufacturing of custom iron gates and railings by working at their uncle’s shop in Jersey City, New Jersey before launching their own business.  L & P designs, manufactures, and installs wrought iron fencing, automatic gates, metal stairs, ornamental fencing and gates, railings and structural steel.
