Steel Strengthening of the Southbound Bridge
The Southbound Gold Star Memorial Bridge will be undergoing localized steel strengthening to support the construction of a shared use path, beginning in the summer of 2025, and estimated for completion in the summer of 2029. This project is currently in design. See the full project schedule below.
To improve the multi-modal connectivity between the Cities of New London and Groton over the Gold Star Bridges, the steel superstructures of the Southbound Gold Star Bridges are to be strengthened to accommodate a shared use path and increase the bridges' load capacities. This work is being added to the northbound strengthening project (0094-0256).
The Southbound Bridge Strengthening scope currently includes:
- Truss member strengthening
- Gusset plate strengthening
- Localized painting at steel strengthening locations
