Know the Zone: Automated Work Zone Speed Control Program

Fast Facts: What You Need to Know

The automated work zone speed control program will be used in select highway work zones beginning October 31, 2025. The Know the Zone: Automated Work Zone Speed Control Program complements the state’s ongoing efforts to reduce work zone crashes to zero.

Automated work zone speed control systems will be active in no more than fifteen (15) designated locations on limited-access State highways at any time.

Drivers will be able to see signage that clearly indicates the active use of automated work zone speed control systems before entering work zones with them in use. Signage will also be posted at the end of work zones.

Automated work zone speed control systems will capture a series of images of vehicles traveling 10 mph or greater than the posted work zone speed limit. If the occupants of the vehicle are visible in an image, the image of the occupants will be masked.

The registered owner of the vehicle photographed by the automated work zone speed control systems will receive a citation - called a "Notice of Liability" - in the mail.
