Transportation Maintenance Registered Apprentice 1

Job description

This program offers one year of paid on-the-job training and classroom instruction, equipping participants with the skills needed to excel as a Transportation Maintainer 2 upon completion of the program. These positions will be available at select garage locations throughout the state.   

 

The Training:

You will participate in a structured training program that includes both hands-on and classroom education. Applicants must obtain a valid Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) with tank endorsement prior to being hired if they are selected to participate in this program.

 

Length of Training:

Registered Apprentices must successfully complete at least 26 weeks of training, which includes approximately 4 weeks of CDL training. Once completed you will advance into a Transportation Maintenance Registered Apprentice 2 classification

To advance, you must reside within 20 miles of the posted locations and possess the following:

  • Evaluation rating of good or better
  • Possess/Attain a Commercial Driver’s License with Tank Endorsement
  • A valid Medical Examiner’s Card (MEC) 

 

The Role:

As a Transportation Maintenance Registered Apprentice 1, you will:

  • Learn to operate and maintain various types of highway construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Assist in performing a variety of tasks related to highway maintenance including, but not limited to, snow and ice removal, pothole repair, and drainage maintenance.
  • Strictly adhere to safety guidelines and protocols to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Collaborate with experienced transportation professionals to successfully implement all training measures.
  • Develop the skills necessary to become a qualified CDL Driver and proficient in highway maintenance operations.
  • Complete assigned tasks with a high level of precision and efficiency.

QCW Auto Mechanic Statewide

  • For candidates without a CDL: As a condition of permanent employment, selected candidates must obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) A or B, with "tank and airbrake endorsements," and a valid Medical Examiner's Card (MEC) within 6-months of initial employment. Selected candidates will be enrolled in, and expected to complete, an agency paid selected CDL training program to assist in preparation for CDL licensure. This requires a selected candidate to obtain a CDL learning permit from the Department of Motor Vehicles. CDL permit is required by date of hire.  
  • For candidates who already possess a CDL: Be sure to indicate the Type, Issuing Agency, License number, Expiration Date, and all endorsements in the "Licenses and Professional Certificates" section of your application. You will also be required to thoroughly complete the Connecticut Department of Transportation Commercial Driver Supplement (CTDOT-CDL-1) form.

Necessary licenses/certifications

  • One (1) year of experience in the construction, landscaping, commercial driving, snow plowing, maintenance and repair of roadsides, roadways, bridges or airports, in work involving the operation and care of mechanical equipment or work in one of the recognized maintenance trades.
  • Class A or B CDL with Tanker and Airbrakes Endorsement 
  • Valid Med Card
