Responsibilities of the Codes and Standards Committee

Pursuant to the requirements of Connecticut General Statutes 29-252, the State Building Inspector and the Codes and Standards Committee (CAS) are responsible for adoption of a State Building Code based on a nationally recognized model building code.

Pursuant to various sections of Chapter 541 of the Connecticut General Statutes, the Codes and Standards Committee also meets monthly (except July) to hear and decide appeals of decisions of:

  • Local Building Officials 
  • Local Fire Marshals 
  • Local Building Board of Appeals 
  • State Building Inspector 
  • State Building Inspector together with Office of Protection and Advocacy 
  • State Fire Marshal

The Codes and Standards Committee has established a procedure for filing appeals concerning decisions made by building code officials and fire code officials. The Request for Appeal Form shall be used when submitting an appeal for relief from a decision.

Codes Amendment Subcommittee

The Codes and Standards Committee conducts the majority of its technical review work for future state building and fire safety codes in its Codes Amendment Subcommittee meetings.
