Each Earth Day offers us a moment to reflect on our progress, renew our commitment to the planet, and take meaningful action—both individually and as a state. As we celebrate Earth Day’s 56th anniversary, the Connecticut Department of Administrative Services (DAS) is proud to highlight the steps we’re taking to build a more sustainable, energy-smart future for Connecticut.
Advancing Sustainability in State Operations
Across the state, DAS is actively working to reduce emissions, conserve resources, and improve environmental stewardship through several key initiatives:
• DAS, in collaboration with the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), is finalizing a comprehensive Decarbonization Study for state buildings to be released later this year. This study will guide long-term energy and efficiency strategies across our state portfolio.
• Three major solar projects are underway at Morgan Street Garage, Buckingham Garage, and 24/38 Wolcott Hill Road in Wethersfield—delivering clean, renewable power directly to state operations.
• The transition to electric vehicles continues across the state fleet. New charging stations have been installed at Torrington Courthouse (7 chargers) and at the Uncas on Thames in Norwich, north lot (10 chargers, with more coming this year). A new electric vehicle charging contract will also take effect on May 1st.
• DAS has added food scrap collection to the Rubbish & Recycling contract, supporting agencies that have implemented food scrap diversion programs and helping reduce waste statewide.
• A new Environmentally Preferable Purchasing (EPP) policy is now available to guide both state agencies and municipalities, paired with an updated, resource-rich EPP website to support local policy creation and sustainability planning.
• To support pollinators and beautify our surroundings, DAS planted native flowers along the plaza and roadside at our headquarters—an investment that benefits ecosystems and residents alike.
What You Can Do This Earth Day
While state level progress is important, every Connecticut resident can play a role in protecting our environment. Even small actions can create a big impact:
• Recycle Right: Check your town’s recycling guidelines to ensure you’re disposing of materials properly—including food scraps, electronics, and hazardous waste. Tools like RecycleCT can help you determine what belongs in the recycling bin.
• Reduce Single-Use Plastics: Switch to reusable bags, bottles, and containers to help cut down on unnecessary plastic waste.
• Conserve Energy: Use major appliances—like washers, dryers, and dishwashers—outside peak hours (typically 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.). Shifting energy use helps reduce grid strain and overall emissions.
Looking Ahead Together
Earth Day is more than a date on the calendar—it’s a reminder that sustainability is a shared commitment. By working together across agencies, communities, and households, we can build a healthier, more resilient future for Connecticut.
Happy Earth Day from all of us at DAS!
