Work zones are essential to building and maintaining quality highways, and we all play important roles in keeping them safe for drivers, passengers, and workers.
The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is implementing a program to strengthen our ongoing efforts to improve the safety of CTDOT work zones. The CTDOT Know the Zone: Automated Work Zone Speed Control Program will be implemented to reduce speeding, crashes, injuries, and fatalities in work zones. This program uses speed safety cameras to capture information about vehicles that speed through select work zones. The registered owners of the vehicles captured speeding by the automated work zone speed control program will be issued warnings or citations by mail.

How It Works

Step 1: The system identifies approaching vehicles traveling 10 mph or more over the posted speed limit and triggers the cameras.
Step 2: A series of pictures are taken of the vehicle as it approaches and passes the speed safety camera.
Step 3: Data - including the images, time, date, posted speed, vehicle speed, location, lane and direction of travel - is collected.
Step 4: The data is reviewed by systems and sworn police officers to determine if a violation occurred.
Step 5: A warning or infraction is mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle.
Signs will be present at approximately 1,000 and 500 ft. in advance of the highway work zone speed safety camera area.

**All locations within the map interface below are approximate. CTDOT makes no guarantee, expressed or implied, about the accuracy of any individual automated work zone speed control system location at any specific point in time. At any time of day, on any day, the automated work zone speed control system may be placed at up to 15 active locations across any of the identified project extents.
Project Schedule
Automated work zone speed control system development took place between October 2025 and December 2025.
Between October 2025 and this coming June 2026, there were and will continue to be limited initial deployments and data collection, with system enhancements taking place at the same time from December 2025 through June 2026.
June 1, 2026, will also mark a warning period of limited deployments and enhancements, while full systems operations and maintenance also begin.
Full equipment deployments will then begin on July 6, 2026 and will be supported by the full system operations and maintenance. The end date for the full equipment deployment, operations, and maintenance is to be determined.
In December 2026, year-end performance reporting will begin and will run until February 2027.
