Public Invited to Informational Meeting Regarding the Replacement of Bridge Carrying Route 53 over the Saugatuck Reservoir in Redding

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) will conduct an in-person public information meeting concerning the replacement of Bridge No. 01015 carrying Route 53 over the Saugatuck Reservoir in Redding on Thursday, June 27, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. at the Redding Community Center at 37 Lonetown Road in Redding.

The public information meeting is being held to provide the public and local community the opportunity to offer comments or ask questions regarding the proposed project. A question and answer (Q&A) session will immediately follow the presentation. For instructions on ways to provide comments and ask questions, please visit http://portal.ct.gov/DOTRedding116-135.

“The purpose of the project is to replace the bridge to address the poor condition of the existing substructure, improving safety for motorists,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Project Manager Ken-Taro Plude. “We encourage the public to attend this meeting to share their feedback with the CTDOT project team to incorporate into the design.”

The proposed structure is a single span steel girder superstructure with curb-to-curb width of 32 feet and a span length of 65 feet. The superstructure will be supported on semi-integral reinforced concrete abutments.

There are right-of-way impacts associated with the proposed improvements, including permanent takes of Aquarion Water Company property around the proposed abutments and wingwalls, and temporary construction easements to Aquarion Water Company property to demolish the existing structure and build the proposed structure.

Construction is anticipated to begin in 2026 based on the availability of funding, acquisition of rights of way, and approval of permit(s). The estimated construction cost for this project is approximately $7.2 million. This project is anticipated to be undertaken with 80% federal funds and 20% state funds.

Language assistance may be requested by contacting the CTDOT Language Assistance Call Line (860) 594-2109. Requests should be made at least five business days prior to the meeting. Language assistance is provided at no cost to the public and efforts will be made to respond to timely requests for assistance.

Members of the public can submit comments and questions during the two-week public comment period following the meeting. Please submit comments and questions by July 11, 2024, to DOTProject0116-0135@ct.gov or (860) 594-2020, or Ken-Taro Plude at Ken-Taro.Plude@ct.gov or (860) 594-3343.
