The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is hosting a construction open house on Thursday, May 16, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. regarding the replacement of retaining walls along Route 44 in Norfolk at the Norfolk Foundation HUB at 2 Station Place in Norfolk.
The construction open house will allow the public and local community the opportunity to meet the project construction team and ask questions regarding the construction project. “This project will replace the compromised rubble masonry retaining walls and create a safer corridor for along Route 44 in Norfolk,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Project Manager Amy Hare. “We encourage the community to attend this meeting to meet the CTDOT construction team and ask any questions they may have about the design and construction plans.”
The purpose of the project is to stabilize the northern slope along Route 44 for the safety of the roadway. The project is needed because the integrity of the existing rubble masonry walls has been compromised and are at risk of failure. The project involves the replacement of three dry rubble masonry retaining walls with two retaining walls. Route 44 will also be reconstructed to provide 12-foot travel lanes, 5-foot shoulders, and a 6-foot buffer between the shoulder and the walls. The project also includes a reconstructed drainage system to accommodate Center Cemetery sheet flow and other roadway improvements.
There are right-of-way impacts associated with the proposed improvements, including the acquisition of the property at 59 Old Colony Road, as well as several minor easements along Route 44.
Utility relocations are underway and anticipated to continue. Construction is anticipated to begin summer 2024, based on the relocation of the utilities. The estimated construction cost is approximately $37.2 million. This project is anticipated to be undertaken with 80% federal funds and 20% state funds.
