Your unemployment packet
When you separate from your employment, your employer is supposed to provide you with a Separation Packet that includes your “pink slip.” It includes the employer’s stated reason for your unemployment. Common reasons include laid off for lack of work, voluntarily left, and discharged. You must provide your reason for separation and other employment information when you apply for unemployment benefits. However, if the employer does not provide the packet, you should still file immediately.
The packet usually includes instructions on how to apply for benefits, the questions you’ll be asked when applying, and any other information you may need when you file your claim. The unemployment packet is also available online in Spanish from the Department of Labor.
