Welcome to the webpage for State Project No. 0170-3632, Proposed Installation of Roundabout on Route 178 (Wintonbury Ave & School St) in Bloomfield.
A hybrid public informational meeting for the project will be held on Tuesday, December 1, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at the Bloomfield Town Hall at 800 Bloomfield Ave and virtually on Zoom. This meeting aims to inform the community about the proposed project, gather feedback, and answer any questions.
The proposed improvement involves reconstructing the existing intersection as a single-lane roundabout. The design will include a central island, circulating roadway, truck apron, and splitter islands on each approach to guide entering and exiting traffic and to reduce vehicle speeds through the intersection.
Associated improvements will include updated pavement markings, pedestrian crossings and minor roadway realignment necessary to accommodate the roundabout geometry. If initiated, installing a roundabout in this intersection is anticipated to reduce the high number of head-on and angle crashes, while maintaining a consistent flow of traffic through the area.
Right-of-way impacts include several minor land acquisitions in the immediate project area due to the geometry of the proposed roundabout. If project is approved, construction is expected to start spring 2031, depending on funding, right-of-way acquisition, and permits. The estimated cost is $7 million. Funding for this project is still to be determined.
Comments and questions can be submitted during the two-week public comment period after the meeting by Tuesday, December 15, 2026, to:
