The 2024 Connecticut Daily Travel Survey (CDTS) was a comprehensive, statewide, daily travel survey conducted on behalf of the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CT DOT). The survey was conducted by Resource Systems Group, Inc. (RSG), in association with CDM Smith, with a data collection period that spanned from September 3, 2024, to December 3, 2024. The primary objective of the CDTS was to assist CTDOT in constructing a more comprehensive and accurate understanding of Connecticut residents’ travel patterns to update the Connecticut Statewide Travel Demand Model (CT SWM) to a new base year.
The CT SWM meets a wide variety of needs throughout the Department, so up-to-date data for the new base year was crucial. In order to create a valid sample, the CDTS sought to collect travel data from 7,500 households; the final dataset, which included 8,400 valid households, exceeded the original goal. After collection, survey weighting was used to scale each respondent’s answer to account for the relative proportion of population they represent, based on a variety of socioeconomic and demographic factors.
Prior to the 2024 effort, Connecticut’s last two daily travel surveys were conducted in 1978 and 2016. The COVID-19 pandemic had a sudden and significant impact on travel behavior, most notably increasing the number of residents who work from home part or full-time, in addition to accelerating the prevalence and utilization of on-demand delivery services, which became more normalized through the secondary effects of pandemic living. CTDOT acknowledged and understood that identifying and incorporating residents’ changes in travel behavior into the travel demand model was imperative to accurately and confidently completing its work, which led to the development of the most recent CDTS. The data collected from the CDTS enabled CTDOT to update the CT SWM to a post-COVID base year, which has led to more accurate decision-making throughout the Department.
All data collected during the CDTS was completely confidential.
