The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) today broke ground on the East Haddam Swing Bridge Project with a special event held at Eagles Landing State Park. CTDOT Commissioner Joe Giulietti was joined by Haddam First Selectman Robert McGarry, East Haddam First Selectman Irene Haines, and State Representative Christine Palm for the groundbreaking event.

“The Swing Bridge is 110 years old, and this is its first major rehabilitation. The steel will be strengthened, the mechanicals will be replaced and upgraded, and a new sidewalk will be built, increasing pedestrian and bicycle safety,” Commissioner Giulietti said. “We continue working closely with Haddam, East Haddam, the local Chamber of Commerce and areas businesses to minimize disruptions and share information. Thank you for your ongoing partnership. And thank you, Governor Lamont, the state legislature, Congressman Courtney, and our members of Congress for the continued support of infrastructure investments in Connecticut.”

The East Haddam Swing Bridge Project addresses the structural, mechanical, and electrical components of the swing bridge. The 110-year-old bridge will be upgraded with new mechanical and electrical systems, isolated deck replacements, substructure repairs, roof replacement, improved sidewalk access, and many other repairs to enhance safety and extend the service life of the bridge.

The Swing Bridge project improves safety, access, and operations for vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists. Improvements to the bridge will provide a safe crossing of the Connecticut River for vehicles and pedestrians traveling on Route 82, extend service life, and improve swing span operation reliability.

The East Haddam Swing Bridge Project (CTDOT Project 0040-0141) was awarded to American Bridge Company at a cost of $74.8 million. Work is just beginning and is expected to be completed in the Spring 2025. This project is administered by the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Office of Construction, District 2 in Norwich.

Members of the public are advised that this will be an active work zone. At times, lane closures and detours will be in effect. Motorists are advised to use caution in work zones: slow down, keep a safe distance, and stay alert.
