Railroad Crossing Safety Improvement Projects in Torrington

48-hour detours will be in place during construction

8/28/2026

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is alerting the public that the replacement of railroad crossings on Route 202 (Litchfield Street), Vista Drive, Water Street, and Albert Street in Torrington will take place starting on September 12, 2026. To ensure the safety of workers and the public, and to facilitate installation of new rail crossing infrastructure, the area near each crossing will be closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic for approximately 48 hours. Note that one crossing will be closed at a time.

The existing railroad crossings are being replaced with all-new material to enhance safety and provide a smooth passage for motorists and pedestrians and improve rail infrastructure.

Detours will be posted to safely bypass traffic around the construction sites. All businesses and/or residences will remain accessible. The work at Vista Drive is scheduled to not interfere with the transfer station’s regular hours.

“These crossing replacements will bring the Torrington rail crossings up to a state of good repair and resolve the roadway surface issues motorists have been navigating across the tracks. We ask motorists to follow the posted detour routes during these short-term construction projects,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Bureau Chief of Public Transportation Jeffrey Gonneville. “We’re grateful for the continued cooperation from the city of Torrington, area businesses, and residents as these important safety improvements are completed.”

The project is funded through a CTDOT Rail Freight Improvement Program (RFIP) grant, and is being conducted by the Naugatuck Railroad, the operator of the rail line.

The work is being performed in full coordination between the CTDOT, City of Torrington, first responders, bus and transit providers, and the Naugatuck Railroad. Efforts are being made to minimize the impact on residents and businesses.

Extreme weather may alter the project schedules. Members of the public with questions are encouraged to contact the CTDOT Customer Care Center at (860) 594-2560 or DOT.CustomerCare@ct.gov.
