The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is alerting the public that the replacement of railroad crossing on Route 372 (West Main Street) in Plainville will take place October 10-12, 2026. To ensure the safety of workers and the public, and to facilitate installation of new rail crossing infrastructure, the area near the rail crossing will be closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic for approximately 72 hours.
The existing railroad crossing on Route 372 is being replaced with all-new material to enhance safety and provide a smooth passage for motorists and improve rail infrastructure.
A detour will be posted to bypass through traffic around the construction site utilizing Whiting Street, Broad Street, and Washington Street. All businesses and/or residences along Route 372 will remain accessible.
“This project will restore the West Main Street railroad crossing to a state of good repair and correct the roadway surface conditions along the tracks. For the safety of both workers and the traveling public, the area will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians. Motorists should use the posted detour for the duration of this short-term project,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Bureau Chief of Public Transportation Jeffrey Gonneville. “We appreciate the partnership of the Town of Plainville, local businesses, and residents as this important safety work moves forward.”
The project is funded by a Federal Railroad Administration Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvement (CRISI) grant with State/CTDOT assistance, and being conducted by the Berkshire and Eastern Railroad, the operator of the rail line.
The work is being performed in full coordination between the CTDOT, Town of Plainville, first responders, bus and transit providers, and the Berkshire and Eastern Railroad. Efforts are being made to minimize the impact on residents and businesses.
