The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is alerting the public that the replacement of the railroad crossing on Route 159 (East Street) in Suffield will take place October 21-22, 2026. To ensure the safety of workers and the public, and to facilitate installation of new rail crossing infrastructure, the area near the crossing will be closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic for approximately 48 hours.
The existing railroad crossing on Route 159 is being replaced with new material to enhance safety and provide a smoother passage for motorists and improve rail infrastructure.
A detour will be posted to route traffic around the construction site utilizing Routes 190, 91, and 140. Please use caution while following posted detour routes and allow additional time to travel through the area. All businesses and residences along Route 159 will remain accessible.
“The work being done will restore the railroad crossing on Route 159 and address roadway surface issues near the tracks. For the protection of crews and the public, the crossing will be temporarily closed to all traffic. Travelers are advised to use the designated detour throughout the project,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Bureau Chief of Public Transportation Jeffrey Gonneville. “We appreciate the collaboration with and understanding of the Town of Suffield, area businesses, and residents as this necessary safety improvement project is completed.”
The project is being funded by the Connecticut Southern Railroad (CSO), the owner and operator of the rail line, and is being conducted by the railroad and its contractor. The work is being performed in coordination between CTDOT, Town of Suffield, first responders, bus and transit providers, and the CSO.
Extreme weather may alter the project schedules. Members of the public with questions are encouraged to contact the CTDOT Customer Care Center at (860) 594-2560 or by using the form at customercare.dot.ct.gov.
