As Super Bowl weekend approaches, the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is teaming up with state and local law enforcement to remind fans that no game is worth a life lost to impaired driving. Whether you’re watching at home, at a party, or heading out with friends, arranging a safe way to get home should be part of your game plan.
This Sunday, February 8, 2026, fans across Connecticut will gather for the Big Game. If your plans include alcohol, arrange for a sober ride before kickoff, whether that means designating a driver, calling a taxi, or using a rideshare. Hosts can also help keep everyone safe by providing food and non-alcoholic beverages.
“Super Bowl Sunday brings people together for the Big Game and no matter who you're rooting for, remember that safety is always the winning strategy,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto. “If you’re drinking, don’t get behind the wheel. If you're hosting a party, don't let your guests drive impaired. Have a game plan and help prevent tragedies before they happen.”
In Connecticut in 2023, the most recent year with verified data, 113 people were killed in alcohol-impaired crashes.
According to NHTSA, in 2023, 12,429 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, accounting for nearly one-third of all traffic fatalities nationwide. That year, one person was killed every 42 minutes in an alcohol impaired driving crash.
“Impaired driving is not just illegal, it’s deadly,” said Colonel Daniel Loughman, Commanding Officer of the Connecticut State Police. “Troopers will be on patrol this Super Bowl weekend to keep roads safe and free of hazards. If you see a suspected impaired driver, please call 911 immediately, as this is a true emergency.”
Hosting a safe Super Bowl celebration:
- Provide a variety of snacks and non-alcoholic beverages.
- Encourage guests to designate a sober driver before arriving.
- Encourage everyone to eat, stay hydrated, and pace their alcohol consumption.
- Never serve alcohol to anyone underage; it’s illegal and dangerous.
“Super Bowl Sunday is a time for neighbors and friends to come together,” said Watertown Police Chief Josh Bernegger, Chairman of the Connecticut Police Chiefs Association Traffic Safety Committee. “Celebrate responsibly by making smart choices, looking out for each other, and always having a sober ride home. Everyone has a role in keeping our roads safe.”
