CTDOT Plans to Replace Existing Traffic Control Signal Equipment in various towns in Connecticut

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is developing plans under State Project No. 0173-0560 to replace existing traffic control signal equipment in Branford, Bridgeport, Darien, Fairfield, Norwalk, Shelton, and Westport.

The project involves full replacements of the traffic signal equipment at twelve intersections, partial upgrades at three intersections, controller upgrades at eleven intersections, and signal equipment removal at one intersection. At full replacement intersections, pedestrian control features (countdown pedestrian indications, accessible pushbuttons, sidewalk ramps) will be upgraded in an effort to improve accessibility and pedestrian safety. CTDOT will coordinate with the City/Town during the design phase. The following intersections are included:

 

Traffic Control Signal – Full Replacement Intersections:

  • U.S. Route 1 (North & East Main Street) at East Main Street in Branford
  • I-95 Ramps at Leetes Island Road and Gould Lane in Branford
  • U.S. Route 1 (Boston Post Road) at Near Water Lane in Darien
  • U.S. Route 1 (Boston Post Road) at Rings End Road in Darien
  • U.S. Route 1 (Boston Post Road) at Pine Creek Road in Fairfield
  • Route 135 (North Benson Road) at Walls Drive and I-95 on-ramp in Fairfield
  • S.R. 719 (Main Avenue) At Route 123 (New Canaan Avenue & Main Street) in Norwalk
  • U.S. Route 1 (Westport Avenue) at Pepperidge Farm Drive and Hills Road in Norwalk
  • Route 110 (Howe Avenue) at S.R. 712 (Bridge Street) & Bridge Street in Shelton
  • S.R. 714 (Bridgeport Avenue) at ABS/Shelton Square North Drives in Shelton
  • Route 110 (River Road) at Constitution Boulevard in Shelton
  • Route 57 (Canal & Main Street) at Main Street in Westport

Traffic Control Signal – Partial Upgrade (Controller Replacement, Communications Equipment installation) Intersections:

  • S.R. 714 (Bridgeport Avenue) at Route 8 Southbound Off Ramp & Homestead Village Drive in Shelton
  • S.R. 714 (Bridgeport Avenue) at Shelton Square South Drive & Duchess Drive in Shelton

Traffic Control Signal – Partial Upgrade (Controller Replacement Only) Intersections:

  • U.S. Route 1 (East Main Street) at Mill Plain Road in Branford
  • U.S. Route 1 (Boston Post Road) at Noroton Avenue in Darien
  • U.S. Route 1 (Boston Post Road) at Old Kings Highway in Darien
  • U.S. Route 1 (Westport Avenue) at George Avenue in Norwalk
  • U.S. Route 1 (Westport Avenue) at Vollmer and Walter Avenue in Norwalk
  • U.S. Route 1 (Westport Avenue) at Strawberry Hill Avenue in Norwalk
  • U.S. Route 1 (Westport Avenue) at Willard Road in Norwalk in Norwalk
  • .S. Route 1 (Westport Avenue) at Dry Hill and Stew Leonard's East Dr in Norwalk
  • U.S. Route 1 (Westport Avenue) at County and Lovatt in Norwalk
  • U.S. Route 1 (Westport Avenue) at Lois Drive in Norwalk
  • U.S. Route 1 (Westport Avenue) at Stew Leonard's West Drive in Norwalk

Traffic Control Signal – Signal Removal Intersection:

  • Route 130 (State Street) at Courtland Street in Bridgeport

The present schedule indicates that the design will be completed in June of 2028, with construction anticipated to start in spring of 2029, assuming acceptance of the project, availability of funding and receipt of any required right-of-way and environmental permits. This project will be undertaken with 20% federal and 80% state funds.
