Railroad Crossing Safety Improvement Project on Route 7 in North Canaan

10/17/2025

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is alerting the public that the replacement of the railroad crossings on Route 7 (Railroad Street) in North Canaan is scheduled to begin at approximately 5 a.m. on Monday, October 27, and extending through Friday, October 31.

The existing railroad crossings, located on Route 7 near the intersection of Killawee Street, are being completely replaced with all-new materials to enhance safety, provide a smooth passage for motorists, as well as ensuring the long-term viability of freight rail service in the region.

The work to replace the railroad crossing will require a detour utilizing North Elm Street due to full closure of Route 7 at the railroad crossing during construction. All businesses and residences on Route 7 will remain accessible throughout the short-term construction project. Detour routes will be clearly posted to bypass the construction site. Motorists are asked to use caution while navigating the detour route.

“This project ensures the freight line remains in a state of good repair. To ensure the safety of everyone, vehicles cannot travel through the work zone. We ask motorists to follow the posted detour routes during this short-term construction project,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Rail Administrator Rich Jankovich. “We appreciate the support and collaboration with the Town of North Canaan, local businesses, residents, and the Housatonic Railroad while this important safety improvement project takes place.”

This project is being performed by the Housatonic Railroad, with assistance from a Connecticut Department of Transportation’s Rail Freight Infrastructure Program grant. Work is being carried out in full coordination between the CTDOT, Town of North Canaan, first responders, bus and transit providers, and the Housatonic Railroad.

Extreme weather may alter the project schedules. Members of the public with questions are encouraged to contact the CTDOT Customer Care Center at (860) 594-2560 or DOT.CustomerCare@ct.gov.
