72-hour detour will be in place during construction
The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is alerting the public that the replacement of railroad crossings on Route 153 (Plains Road) in Essex will take place April 28-30, 2025. To ensure the safety of workers and the public, and to facilitate installation of new rail crossing infrastructure, the area near the rail crossings will be closed to all vehicular and bicycle/pedestrian traffic for approximately 72 hours.
The existing railroad crossings on Route 153 are being replaced with all-new materials to enhance safety and provide a smooth passage for motorists.
A detour will be posted to bypass the construction site. All businesses and/or residences along Route 153 will remain accessible.
“To ensure the safety of workers and the public, vehicles cannot travel through the area. We ask motorists to follow the posted detour routes during this short-term construction project,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Bureau Chief of Public Transportation Benjamin Limmer. “This project will ensure the railroad crossings on Route 153 remain in a state of good repair, and addresses roadway surface concerns across the tracks. We are thankful for the continue support and collaboration with the Town of Essex to minimize the impacts to local community during this project.”
The project is partially funded by a CTDOT grant, and being conducted by the Valley Railroad Company, the operator of the rail line.
The work is being performed in coordination between the CTDOT, Town of Essex, first responders, bus and transit providers, and the Valley Railroad Company. Efforts are being taken to minimize the impact on residents and businesses.
Extreme weather may alter the project schedules. Members of the public with questions are encouraged to contact the CTDOT Customer Care Center at (860) 594-2560 or DOT.CustomerCare@ct.gov.
