The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is alerting the public that the replacement of the single railroad crossing on Route 14A (Railroad Avenue) near Canterbury Road in Plainfield will take place beginning May 7, 2025. To ensure the safety of workers and the public, and to facilitate installation of new rail crossing infrastructure, the area near the rail crossing will be closed to all vehicular and bicycle/pedestrian traffic for approximately 48 hours.
The existing railroad crossing on Route 14A is being replaced with all-new materials to enhance safety, provide a smooth passage for motorists, and ensure the long-term viability of the freight rail line in Plainfield.
A detour will be posted to bypass the construction site. All businesses and/or residences along Route 14A will remain accessible, with the only closure being at the rail crossing.
“This project improves safety and ensures the Route 14A railroad crossing remains in a state of good repair. While this work is underway, a detour is needed to protect the workers on site. We ask the public to follow the posted detour routes during this short-term construction project,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Bureau Chief of Public Transportation Benjamin Limmer. “We appreciate the support and collaboration with the Town of Plainfield, local businesses, first responders, and residents while this important safety upgrade takes place.”
The work is being conducted by the Providence and Worcester Railroad, the owner/operator of the rail line. Project coordination between the CTDOT, Town of Plainfield, first responders, bus and transit providers, and the Providence and Worcester Railroad are ongoing to minimize the impact on residents and businesses.
Extreme weather may alter the project schedules. Members of the public with questions are encouraged to contact the CTDOT Customer Care Center at (860) 594-2560 or DOT.CustomerCare@ct.gov
