CTDOT Plans to Upgrade Advanced Traffic Management System in Greater Hartford Area

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is developing plans to upgrade and expand existing Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) camera and fiber optic communications infrastructure in Hartford, West Hartford, Farmington, New Britian, Plainville, Southington, Cheshire, Waterbury, and Naugatuck.

The project involves installing approximately 32 miles of fiber optic cable on I-84 between Route 64 in Waterbury and the Main Fiber Hub in Hartford. Along Route 8, approximately 6 miles of new fiber optic cable will be installed between Route 68 in Naugatuck and Huntington Ave in Waterbury. The project involves upgrading fifty-seven (57) existing CCTV camera sites along I-84 and eleven (11) existing CCTV camera sites along Route 8. Two (2) new cameras will be installed along I-84. Twelve (12) existing Variable Message Signs (VMS) will be connected to the proposed fiber optic cable system through new branch fiber.

The present schedule indicates that the design will be completed in July 2026 with construction anticipated to start in the spring of 2027 assuming acceptance of the project, availability of funding and receipt of any required right-of-way and environmental permits.  This project will be undertaken with 80% federal and 20% state funds.

It is CTDOT's policy to keep the public informed and involved when such projects are undertaken.  It is important that the community share its concerns with CTDOT to assist in the project's development. A public informational meeting will not be conducted upon the completion of the preliminary design.  At this time, it is not anticipated that a formal public hearing will be necessary.
