The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is developing plans for a new maintenance facility and salt shed at 321 Liberty Street in Stonington.
The project involves the construction of a new maintenance facility and salt shed to be located at 321 Liberty Street. This development will be referred to as the Stonington Maintenance Facility and the existing maintenance facility at 150 Welles Road in Groton will be converted to a cold storage facility. The new 31,500 square feet Stonington Maintenance Facility will be split story composed of 25,000 square feet of bay area including (17) maintenance vehicle bays and (2) drive through wash bays, and a 6,500 square feet office core area. The building will be steel frame construction with exterior steel siding and masonry. The present schedule indicates that final design plans will be available in September 2025. The project will be state funded.
This project is necessary because the current facilities located on Welles Road in Groton are functionally obsolete and do not meet current CTDOT standards. The site also does not comply environmentally with CTDOT’s standing agreement with the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP). The number of personnel and type of maintenance operations will not change as a result of the project.
It is the CTDOT’s policy to keep the public informed and involved when such projects are undertaken and important that the community share its concerns with us to assist in the project’s development.
