The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is developing plans to rehabilitate an out-of-service railroad switch tower in Stamford. This project involves the rehabilitation of an out-of-service historic switch tower on the Metro North New Haven Line near Canal Street for use as a railroad crew building. Improvements to the building include a storage area, storage room, spaces for workstations, work benches, kitchenette, restrooms, and closets for mechanical, plumbing, and IT/communications. Additional building improvements include necessary structural repairs to slabs and walls, new fire protection systems, new plumbing systems, new HVAC systems, new electrical service including a back-up standby generator, and telecom service. Site improvements include removal and replacement of existing access stairs, a concrete sidewalk from the stair platform, a new water service connection to Canal Street, and a proposed sanitary sewer connection to Dock Street.
The present schedule indicates that the design will be completed in October 2026, with construction anticipated to start in the spring of 2027, assuming acceptance of the project, availability of funding and receipt of any required right-of-way and environmental permits. This project will be undertaken with 100% state funds.
It is CTDOT's policy to keep the public informed and involved when such projects are undertaken.
