CTDOT Is Developing Plans to Increase Safety on I84 and I91 in Hartford

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is developing plans to increase the quality, safety, and number of pedestrian connections to enhance the comfort and security of pedestrians crossing highways and ramps at five sites along I-84 and I-91 in Hartford.

Each project site will be evaluated for its deficiencies. Proposed improvement may include crosswalks, sidewalks, curb ramps, pedestrian signal heads, and signage. Changes to the intersecting ramp geometry and curblines will be performed as required.

These sites include:

  • I-84 at Sisson Avenue and West Boulevard
  • I-91 at Jennings Road
  • Ramp to I-91S at Columbus Boulevard
  • I-91On-Ramp at Sheldon Street and Taylor Street
  • I-91 at Brainard Road and Murphy Road

The present schedule indicates that the design will be completed in August 2027, with construction anticipated to start in spring 2028, assuming acceptance of the project, availability of funding, and receipt of any required right-of-way and environmental permits.  This project will be undertaken with eighty percent (80%) Federal funds and twenty percent (20%) State funds.

It is CTDOT’s policy to keep the public informed and involved when such projects are undertaken.  It is important that the community share its concerns with CTDOT to assist in the project’s development.  A public informational meeting will be conducted upon the completion of the preliminary design.

If anyone has questions or comments on this project, contact Mr. Scott Bushee, P.E., Principal Engineer, at (860) 594-2079 or by e-mail at Scott.Bushee@ct.gov. Please make reference to State Project No. 0063-0741.
