The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is developing plans to expand existing truck parking at the Southington Rest Area along I-84 eastbound.
Truck parking shortages are a national concern affecting the safety of commercial motor vehicle drivers and other roadway users as well as the efficiency of U.S. supply chains. As part of the Connecticut statewide freight plan update, the CTDOT conducted a statewide truck parking study to identify potential locations for expanding truck parking. The rest area on I-84 eastbound in Southington was selected as a priority location to expand existing truck parking. This is project is part of a larger effort to increase truck parking by more than 40% across the state.
The proposed work generally includes modifying existing parking areas for trucks and RVs-trailers-campers and expanding truck and bus parking (29 additional spaces) with provisions for associated drainage, stormwater management, site circulation, site access, and site utility modifications. There are no facility improvements at this site, aside for improving ADA accessibility to the building. No restriction to rest area access and minimal impact to internal rest area circulation are anticipated during construction. The present schedule indicates that final design plans will be available this summer 2025. The project will be 80 percent (80%) federal funding, and 20 percent (20%) state funded.
The design plans for these projects are expected to be completed in July of 2025, with a tentative advertising date for construction in September of 2025.
It is CTDOT’s policy to keep the public informed and involved when such projects are undertaken and important that the community share its concerns with us to assist in the project’s development.
