CTDOT Is Developing Plans on I84 Route 2 and 15 to Increase Safety in East Hartford

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is developing plans to increase the quality, safety, and number of pedestrian connections to enhance the comfort and security of pedestrians crossing highways and ramps at eight sites along I-84, Route 2 and 15  in East Hartford.

Each project site will be evaluated for its deficiencies. Proposed improvements may include crosswalks, sidewalks, curb ramps, pedestrian signal heads, and signage. Changes to the intersecting ramp geometry and curblines will be performed as required.

These sites include:

  • I-84 at Governor Street and Thomas Street
  • Route 15 On-Ramp at Silver Lane
  • Route 2 at Maple Street and Main Street
  • I-84 at East River Drive and Darlin Street
  • Route 2 at Darlin Street
  • Route 2 at Pitkin Street
  • Route 2 at High Street
  • Route 2 at East River Drive

The present schedule indicates that the design will be completed in August 2027, with construction anticipated to start in spring 2028, assuming acceptance of the project, availability of funding, and receipt of any required right-of-way and environmental permits.  This project will be undertaken with eighty percent (80%) Federal funds and twenty percent (20%) State funds.

It is CTDOT’s policy to keep the public informed and involved when such projects are undertaken and is important that the community share its concerns with CTDOT to assist in the project’s development. A public informational meeting will be conducted upon the completion of the preliminary design.
