The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is celebrating National Bike Month this May by encouraging the public to get outside and go for a ride. Whether you’re an experienced rider or haven’t biked in a while, May is a wonderful time to pedal around your community.
To celebrate National Bike Month, CTDOT is taking part in National Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day on Wednesday, May 7. CTDOT is also participating in Bike to Work Week from May 11-17 with various activities planned.
“National Bike Month showcases the many benefits of bicycling for transportation, recreation, and health,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto. “I encourage schools to take part in Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day and for businesses to encourage their employees to join Bike to Work Day. Not only does biking promote physical activity, but it’s a fun and environmentally friendly way to get around.”
“Encouraging students to walk, bike, or roll to school is about more than getting from one place to another — it is about promoting wellness, building community, and supporting student engagement,” said Connecticut Department of Education Commissioner Charlene M. Russell-Tucker. “When students begin the day with physical activity and a sense of connection, they arrive at school energized and ready to learn.”
In 2005, the CTDOT established a Safe Routes to School Program (SRTS). Since then, many communities participating in the SRTS Program have shown improved safety and accessibility for all students. CTDOT is excited to share the following updates from the SRTS Team:
- CTDOT is offering Walk, Bike & Roll to School Day incentives that registered schools can request online.
- SRTS expanded their bike and pedestrian safety and skills trainings to include an on-bike component. Communities and schools can request these services online.
- An interactive online map highlights all SRTS activities across the state.
Those riding their bikes in May are also encouraged to sign up for the 2025 Drive Less Connecticut Challenge. The annual campaign, which launched on Earth Day and runs through May 31, challenges everyone to drive less and explore greener transportation options.
