The Connecticut Department of Transportation Urges Caution Around Snowplows and Safe Driving in Winter Weather Conditions

Residents urged not to ‘crowd the plow’ as Connecticut braces for snow accumulation over the weekend

NEWINGTON, CT – January 5, 2024 — As winter weather is expected to blanket our region this weekend, the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is reminding motorists to stay off the roads, slow down, and exercise patience as crews work to clear highways and roadways of snow.

“If you must travel this weekend during the storm, please remember to slow down, use caution and leave extra space between yourself and other vehicles. When you see plow drivers out there working to clear the roads, please give them space and don’t crowd the plow,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto. “When we’re given plenty of room to work, it helps ensure we can clear the roadways as quickly as possible to keep residents safe.”

CTDOT is monitoring weather conditions with crews beginning to pretreat highways and roadways in advance of the storm. CTDOT’s fleet of more than 600 trucks and specialized snow removal equipment is ready to go. Crews are on standby and ready to deploy this weekend throughout the state to work until the roads are safe and clear of snow and ice.

Whether it’s snow, sleet or ice, winter weather can cause extremely dangerous road conditions. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2021 there were 395 fatal crashes and an estimated 22,325 injury crashes that occurred when there were snow/sleet conditions at the time of the crash. Preparing yourself – and your vehicle – for winter weather is key.

Staying Clear of Snowplows: As snow and ice removal operations intensify, the CTDOT emphasizes the significance of staying clear of snowplows. Snowplow operators play a critical role in keeping roads safe for all users. Motorists are advised to maintain a safe distance behind snowplows, avoiding blind spots in the back corners of vehicles and allowing operators the necessary space to perform their duties effectively. Attempting to pass a snowplow can result in dangerous consequences, including reduced visibility and the risk of collision with thrown snow or the plow itself.

Safe Driving in Ice and Snow: Winter driving demands extra caution and preparedness. The CTDOT encourages drivers to take the following precautions when navigating icy and snowy conditions:

  1. Slow Down: Reduce your speed to match road conditions. Allow for increased stopping distances and avoid sudden movements.
  2. Maintain a Safe Following Distance: Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you to allow for ample reaction time.
  3. Use Winter Tires: Equip your vehicle with winter tires to enhance traction on slippery surfaces.
  4. Stay Informed: Check weather forecasts and road conditions before embarking on a journey. Postpone travel if conditions are severe. Motorists can use the website CTroads.org for real time traffic conditions and to check for traffic delays before they hit the road. 
  5. Carry Emergency Supplies: Pack a winter emergency kit with essentials such as blankets, water, snacks, a flashlight, and a first aid kit.
  6. Never drive impaired. Whether it’s snowing or not, it is never okay to drive impaired.
