CTDOT Unveils the Four ‘Snowplow Naming Contest’ Winners

(Newington, CT) – The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) announced today the four winning names from its second Snowplow Naming Contest. The contest allowed K-12 schools to vie for the honor of naming four plows to represent the four CTDOT maintenance districts in Connecticut. The 2024 winning names are Up2 Snow Good (Dodd Middle School, Cheshire), SnowJaws (Hebron Elementary School, Hebron), SnowBob Plowpants (Ox Ridge School, Darien), and Fast & Flurryous (The Sherman School, Sherman).

Nearly 40 schools in Connecticut participated by submitting a snowplow name. CTDOT staff participated by voting for the top names and winners. The program engaged creative thinking around road safety by encouraging schools to hold contests to come up with their best names. The snowplow names will be displayed on four CTDOT tandem axle tow plows that have 26-feet plowable width. Governor Ned Lamont also joined in the fun and revealed the four winning names in a special social media video here.

“Our drivers are committed to keeping Connecticut’s highways and state roads safe and clear of snow and ice in the winter and maintaining our roadways year-round. Our plow drivers do their best work when the public is aware of snowplow safety guidelines and giving them room to work,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Bureau Chief of Highway Operations Paul Rizzo. “Connecticut youth can be our best advocates when they are engaged with road safety in fun, creative ways like the Snowplow Naming Contest. Thank you to the students, teachers, and staff for participating this year.”

“I am delighted by the success of the Connecticut DOT Snowplow Naming Contest, which not only provides an enjoyable and educational experience for our students, but also emphasizes the significance of snowplow safety,” said Connecticut Department of Education Commissioner Charlene M. Russell-Tucker. “Congratulations to all the talented students who participated in the contest. I look forward to seeing your winning names proudly displayed on CTDOT's snowplows this winter.”

Connecticut K-12 schools had from mid-October to mid-December to submit their most creative snowplow name. These newly named plow trucks will now join Buzz Iceclear, Husky McSalty, Plowzilla, and Scoop Dogg on Connecticut’s roads. CTDOT thanks all students and staff who participated in the Snowplow Naming Contest and plans to reach out to schools who submitted winning entries so they can see the newly named plow trucks in-person.
