Replacement and Upgrade of Coordinated Traffic Signal System (CTSS) Equipment on Route 5/15 in Berlin, Newington, and Wethersfield

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing that preliminary work activity for the replacement and upgrade of the Coordinated Traffic Signal System (CTSS) on Route 5/15  (Berlin Turnpike) in Berlin, Newington, and Wethersfield is scheduled to start August 1, 2021. 

Work will be performed at the following intersections on Route 5/15 and motorists should anticipate various lane closures:

Berlin

  • Int. 007-209 U.S. Route 5 & 15 (Wilbur Cross) at Selden St. and Rowley St.

Newington

  • Int. 093-224 U.S. Route 5 & 15 (Berlin Tpke.) at Webster St. and Modern Tire
  •  Int. 093-227 U.S. Route 5 & 15 (Berlin Tpke.) at Pane Rd. and PC Richards Driveway
  • Int. 093-255 U.S. Route 5 & 15 (Berlin Tpke.) at Lowes and Target Driveway’s
  • Int. 093-201 U.S. Route 5 & 15 (Berlin Tpke.) at Route 172 (Richard St.) and Deming
  • Int. 093-245 U.S. Route 5 & 15 (Berlin Tpke.) at Pascone Place
  • Int. 093-229 U.S. Route 5 & 15 (Berlin Tpke.) at Route 176 (Main St.) and Griswoldville
  • Int. 093-248 U.S. Route 5 & 15 (Berlin Tpke.) at Department’s Southern Drive
  • Int. 093-247 U.S. Route 5 & 15 (Berlin Tpke.) at Department’s Northern Drive
  • Int. 093-228 U.S. Route 5 & 15 (Berlin Tpke.) at Kitts Lane
  • Int. 093-234 U.S. Route 5 & 15 (Berlin Tpke.) at Route 287 (East Robins Ave. and Pent Rd.)

Wethersfield

  • Int. 159-210 U.S. Route 5 & 15 (Berlin Tpke.) at Arrow Rd. and Pent Rd.
  •  Int. 159-258 U.S. Route 5 & 15 (Berlin Tpke.) at Pawtucket Ave.
  • Int. 159-249 U.S. Route 5 & 15 Sothbound at Route 315 (Berlin Tpke.)
  • Int. 159-228 U.S. Route 5 & 15 (Berlin Tpke.) at Nott St.

The project consists of replacing and upgrading the CTSS equipment and associated items including trenching, backfilling, new conduits, new mast arms, video detection, new fiber optic cable, and hand holes to complete the new installations. The project also includes pedestrian modifications such as new sidewalk ramps and pedestrian push buttons.

DOT Project No. 0007-0250 was awarded to Ducci Electrical Contractors, Inc. at a cost of $ 9,944,143.66 on June 14, 2021, and is scheduled to be completed on May 28, 2022.

Lane closures on Route 5 and 15 (Berlin Turnpike) may occur overnight Monday to Friday 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. and Saturday and Sunday 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m. Lane closures for ramps, turning roadways and all other project roadways may occur Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Saturday and Sunday from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m.
